Moving Made Easier
Moving to a new home can be exciting, but it's often a lot more work than most people expect. Coupled with the stress of dealing with realators or landlords, and all the paperwork involved it can quickly become overwhelming. Here are some simple tips from us at Mur's Movin' to help make your moving experience go smoother.
Before the move
- Plan ahead! Especially during the summer months, moving companies can book up to three months in advance. If you're hiring a moving company, call as soon as you know the date you need to make sure you get the day you want.
- Moving is a perfect opportunity to clean out all the items you haven't got around to getting rid of over the years. Call a local charity, thrift store, or make a dump run. This way you aren’t paying to move stuff you don’t actually need or want, and will relieve a lot of stress trying to figure out where to put the things you don't want in your new house.
Packing
- If you feel that you do not have the time or energy to pack your house, we provide a packing service in which we will come in and pack your house the day before the move. You can book this service when booking your move or when you start packing and realize it’s just too much.
- If you decide to pack yourself, Start early and pack only a few boxes every day. This will make the job seem less overwhelming and you won’t get burned out from the stress.
- Pack items you don't use often first. (IE out of season clothes and sports equipment.)
- Try and use the same size of box wherever possible. Using all different size boxes can turn loading the truck into a giant game of Jenga. Starting at just $2.20 per box, our 2, 4, and 6 cubic foot boxes will make loading and unloading that much easier, and greatly reduce the chances of all your boxes toppling over, causing damage.
- Fill boxes right to the top, and make sure they close flat. If there is extra space at the top of the box, fill it with crushed paper or linens. If there is a bulge in the top of the box, remove a few items or use a bigger box. This will let you or the movers stack the boxes higher in the truck, which will take up less space and less time to load and unload.
- Clearly mark on the top and at least two sides of every box which room it will be going to in your new house. This will eliminate a lot of confusion and a lot of time wasted re-moving boxes once they are unloaded.
- If you hire us to come and pack your house for you, make sure to leave all the items you don't want packed (a few sets of clothes, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies) in a clearly separated and marked area such as a bathroom or closet.
Moving Day
- If you've hired us to move you and have followed the advice on this list, all you have to do on the day of the move is sit back and relax. Our qualified professionals will do their best to make sure your move goes off without a hitch.
- If you've decided to do it yourself, try to load one room at a time so it's easier to tell where everything goes at the other end. Also, when loading the truck a good technique is to place big heavy furniture on the floor of the truck, then stack a couple of boxes on top of those, and then place all the loose light things such as dining room chairs and bags of clothes on top of the boxes. This will allow you to stack to the roof of the truck without anything getting crushed or damaged.
